A professor of Pharmacology of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Isa Hussaini Marte made the country proud on Thursday, February 11 at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom.
The scientist latest research opened a new chapter in search for a lasting cure to the dreaded cancer disease with his discovery of Nigerian traditional herbs that show substantial efficacy against cancer, better than the presently used cancer drugs.
Marte shared his knowledge with Sussex Nigerian Society who hosted him in an event titled “Meet the Nigerian Scientist”. He narrated how he was able to hone his competency as a scientist after he moved to the United States in the late 90s. With over $5 million he received as research grant, he and his team investigated rationale for the traditional uses of Nigerian medicinal plants and in the process discovered novel plants with strong anti-cancer properties.
Commending Professor Marte’s research effort, Nigerian acting High Commissioner in London, Adah Simon Ogah, stated that he was impressed that such ground-breaking research was carried out in Nigeria.
He called on the Nigerian scientist to continue his research as it shows promise for solving world problems and positively influencing the global reputation of Nigeria.
